If you choose to do it yourself, carefully pull up the damaged planks by running a putty knife under the damaged edges. You must get rid of the entire plank even if only a small portion of it is damaged. This is because every plank is a single unit. Remove the baseboards under the tiles.

  • This exposes the bare floor underneath and lets you fully inspect your floor to check for buildup of dust or mold. Like with the planks themselves, remove the baseboards one at a time to avoid damaging the flooring even further.
  • If you pry up a plank but don’t notice any damage to it, simply reinstall it back into the floor!

Clean the floor underneath the planks before replacing them.

  • Things like water and dirt can build up under your floorboards, so use a broom and dustpan to sweep everything up. Then, take a cloth and wipe every inch of the exposed floor.
  • If there’s anything on the exposed floor, it can prevent the planks from sliding in place next to one another. Go over the area to ensure nothing could get in the way of the planks.

1. Stop the leak

4. Replace damaged planks

Once you’ve removed the damaged planks from the affected area, you’ll need to replace them with fresh planks.

While this is a very approachable DIY project, many people find it intimidating, since it can be difficult to match new laminate planks with the laminate planks you already have.

Because of this, this portion of the project will be easier if you have planks left over from when you first installed your floor.

If you don’t have any extra planks, head to your local home store to find planks that match your current planks as closely as possible. A slight variation won’t make a large difference once the planks are installed.

Once you’ve found the replacement planks, fit them with your current planks, taking care to avoid nails and other hazards that may have been exposed when you removed the existing laminate flooring.

Reading through your questions, I realized there’s a lot of mystery around it.

A big part of renovating is budgeting. In fact, I would feel 100% confident in saying we are able to renovate BECAUSE WE BUDGET.  So we’re going to pull back the curtain a bit, share our approach to our budget, as well as answer many of the questions sent in on Instagram from all of you.

Of course we won’t pretend we don’t then get the partners and sponsorships — we fully recognize that benefit and perk of our job — but any money saved by those things stays in our project account and goes toward our next project. For us, that means more consistent projects and keeps us and our team employed, but the principle of having the money first, has been the biggest contributor over time to our expanding project budget.

When you simplify the kitchen, everything gets streamlined and the days flow easier. Since so much of life is lived in the kitchen, paring things down so that it’s completely manageable simplifies life on pretty much all levels.

When the kitchen is streamlined it’s easier to prepare meals and whatever mess happens through the rest of the house isn’t as overwhelming, because there is one area that is simple and easy to do what you need to do in.

Pare down the Tupperware.

Pull all your food storage containers out of their drawer or cupboard and immediately discard all the cheap plastic containers (think: yogurt, sour cream & cottage cheese containers). If they can be recycled, then great. But if not, don’t worry about it – you need to just get them out of your home and cupboard. Look at what’s left and pick out enough containers to last you a week: approximately 10. I keep only 10 containers and there are 7 people in our house. Keeping it down to this amount means that when you see there are no more containers available it’s time to clean and fridge and have a left-over night for dinner. This prevents containers from being pushed back in the fridge, forgotten and growing.

Evaluate the decorations.

Do you love the decorations in your kitchen? Or are they there because “that’s what should be there.” I see this most with cupboards and tall ceiling: most people feel that there needs to be plants or ceramics or some cute shabby chic decoration. If you love these items, then keep them. But if they are just there because “there is supposed to be something up there,” and the dust on the plastic ivy annoys you… then take those suckers down and be free of them. It will give your kitchen some breathing room and there will be no more “I should dust that” thoughts running through your head.

Minimize the dishes.

Getting down to only the dishes you use daily is a tremendous help. It forces one to wash dishes consistently, which means that the dirty dishes never take over the kitchen again. You know… the ones when you’ve waited for 4 days to catch up on dishes and now it’s going to take 3-4 hours to do them all? When you pare down to only what you use each day, they can all be done in a few minutes and you can start fresh in the morning. Forcing yourself into a new routine is one of the best ways to develop it: there are no other options.

What happens after a mold inspection?

This depends entirely on the outcome of the inspection.  In many cases, contacted by homeowners who already know they have mold in their house and they are looking for a professional opinion on the severity of the mold, what allowed it to grow and how to get rid of it.  If a mold inspection reveals mold, then produce a certified mold assessment report, which is almost always required to hire someone to remove mold.

When is a mold assessment required

A mold assessment is needed in order for you to hire a remediation company to remove more than 10 square feet of mold from a structure, including houses and other residences.  Almost all mold inspections reveal more than this amount of mold

Mold Testing vs. Mold Inspection

So what’s the difference between mold testing and mold inspection? Unless you’ve gone through the hassle of dealing with mold before, chances are you don’t know what is involved with either one.

Mold testing is when a professional comes and takes samples of the air around the mold. Using a spore trap, they will capture the spores in the air and will then send it to a lab to be analyzed. The mold may also be determined by testing the surface around the mold area. The mold tester will do this by taking a swab sample, a tape sample, or by removing a piece of the mold-infected area.

Mold inspection is when a trained mold inspector comes and looks for evidence of mold inside walls and other areas, including areas where there may be mold damage, such as inside crawlspaces and inside basements. How do I prepare a US tax return?

All U.S. citizens and residents living or traveling outside the United Sates are generally required to file income tax returns in the same way as those residing in the United States.  The deadline to file taxes is April 15th.

Who Must File?

If you are a U.S. citizen or resident alien living or traveling outside the United States, you generally are required to file income tax returns, estate tax returns, and gift tax returns, and pay estimated tax in the same way as those residing in the United States.  Your worldwide income is subject to U.S. income tax, regardless of where you reside.

Your income, filing status, and age generally determine whether you must file an income tax return.  Generally, you must file a return if your gross income from worldwide sources is at least the amount shown for your filing status in the Filing Requirements table in Chapter 1 of Publication 54, Tax Guide for U.S. Citizens and Resident Aliens Abroad.

Business Tax Credits

our general business credit for the year consists of your carryforward of business credits from prior years plus the total of your current year business credits. In addition, your general business credit for the current year may be increased later by the carryback of business credits from later years. You subtract this credit directly from your tax.

How to Claim the Credit

To claim a general business credit, you will first have to get the forms you need to claim your current year business credits.

In addition to the credit form, in most cases you may also need to file Form 3800.

Do I Need to File a Tax Return?

You may not have to file a federal income tax return if your income is below a certain amount. But, you must file a tax return to claim a refundable tax credit or a refund for withheld income tax.

I have a confession to make. Our windows are dirty. I’m not talking about a smudge here and there. I’m talking about fingerprints, handprints, dog nose prints and a few seasons worth of grime built up around the windows. Window cleaning is not my strong suit, and it seems like as soon as it’s done, it’s time to clean them again. But with these tricks, you can get absolutely spotless windows (no, really!) with less effort than you’d think. Which of these window cleaning tips do you plan to try first?

Essential Window Cleaning Tips

First thing’s first: It’s time to clean the blinds. And cleaning between every single slat used to be tedious work, but it’s not anymore.

Get in those hard-to-reach window tracks with a sponge brush dipped in Pine-sol. It’ll make the house smell great, and you’ll finally have white window tracks again.

But if your window tracks look more like this (as mine do), it’s time to harness the power of baking soda and vinegar. Let those ingredients do their thing for 5-10 minutes, and the grime just wipes right off.

How to Clean Windows Without Streaks

This blog post will teach you how to clean windows without streaks. The cleaners at Simply Spotless are well versed in window cleaning. Dust and brush down the windows

The first step to clean your windows without streaks is to remove any excess dirt, dust, and cobwebs. Find a dust-pan brush, a dusting wand, a broom, or something similar. Then brush down the windows to remove any built up dirt, cobwebs, or grime. It best to start at the top of each window and work your way down. Then brush down the window sill and use a dust pan or vacuum to pick up anything that fell on the window sill and the floor.

Pick a detergent and start washing

Both of these will do the job. However, some of you may prefer to use something you already have lying around your home. If that’s the case then you could try a tiny bit of dishwashing detergent mixed with water or you could try vinegar. I’ll talk more about Vinegar later. If you’re using a store bought window cleaning detergent, then just spray it on the window and wipe in a circular motion with a paper towel, newspaper, or a microfibre cloth (recommended).

If you’re using detergent mixed with water then just dip the microfibre cloth (or the sponge of your squeegee) into the water and rub the window in a circular motion. Think Karate Kid – wax on, wax off. For stubborn marks, you might need to get store bought window cleaning solutions involved. Alternatively, you can add a cap of methylated spirits to your water instead.

TIP 1: To get a good clean, it’s best to use cold water. Hot water evaporates too quickly.

TIP 2: Always clean from the top of the windows down. That way you won’t have dirty water dripping down onto the areas you’ve already cleaned. 

Squeegee the window dry

You don’t have to use a squeegee to dry the window but it’s the fastest and most efficient way to get it done. However, using a squeegee properly takes a bit of practice. Hold the squeegee so that the handle is at a 45 degree angle to the glass. Start at the top left of the window and snake your way down going from left to right and then right to left. Use a rag or cloth to wipe the squeegee dry between each stroke or when needed. That will help to prevent steaks.
