Residential And Commercial Painting

Step-by-step guide to how to become a painter and decorator

What do painters and decorators do?

Painters and decorators can work on a variety of different projects, whether domestic, commercial, or industrial. The work can vary widely, but some of your key tasks are likely to include:

Measuring areas and determining how much of each material is required

Stripping old surfaces

Filling or repairing surfaces, for example to fix cracks

Priming surfaces or covering them with undercoat

Mixing paint

Applying paint or other materials, depending on the nature of the job

Painters and decorators normally work 35 to 40 hour weeks, in normal working patterns. However, you may be required to work overtime or during weekends if a project demands it.

What do painters and decorators earn?

Self-employed painters and decorators are free to set their own rates for their work, unlike painters and decorators who work for an existing firm. You’ll need to make sure that you price your work competitively, and in line with your experience and any specialisms.

The skills required to be a painter and decorator

Painters and decorators need to be extremely practical, and happy working with their hands, whether indoors or outdoors. Increasingly, painters and decorators use computer software or digital colour charts to complete tasks like finding the correct paint mix, so you’ll benefit from basic computer skills. You’ll also need some maths in order to work out how much of each material you need

What equipment do painters and decorators need?

If you’re starting out as a self-employed painter and decorator, you’ll need to provide your own equipment. This might include:

Paintbrushes in a variety of sizes

Paint rollers and trays

Materials for cleaning brushes and rollers

Dustsheets

Sandpaper

Spirit levels

Stanley knives

Stepladders

Painting Tools and Materials

In addition to top-quality application equipment, you may need some of the painting tools and painting materials listed below in order to successfully complete your painting project. If you are like many homeowners, you already own some of these items. Depending on the nature of your painting project, you may consider investing in some of the items below.

Step ladders and extension ladders – to help you reach elevated areas

Paint scraper – to remove loose or peeling paint from wood, plaster, and
other surfaces

Triangular-load scraper – to remove paint in small or tight areas

Steel wool – to remove corrosion from metal surfaces

Bristle brush – to clear loose material from masonry

Putty knife – to scrape away loose paint, or to apply filler

Broad putty knife – to fill in and smooth patching compounds in plaster and
wallboard

Sanding block – to hold sandpaper and help you sand surfaces to an even finish

Caulking gun – to apply caulk to cracks in walls, gaps, and seams in woodwork, and the junction of different surfaces (e.g., wood siding and stone)

Tubes of caulk – same as above (note that all-acrylic and siliconized acrylic caulks are paintable; silicone caulk is not)

Masking tape – to protect window panes and trim from paint

Paint guide – to protect carpets and walls when painting baseboards and other trim

Roller tray and grid – to load rollers with paint

Brush comb – to clean paint brushes

Paint pail – to mix paint and carry it to the worksite

Drop cloths – to protect furniture, floors, and shrubbery from paint

can to make your project as easy and headache-free as possible. Beyond that, provide painting services so beautiful that you’ll want nothing more than to show it off.

IS IT A GOOD IDEA TO PAINT YOUR HOME YOURSELF?

An exterior paint job will not only boost your home’s curb appeal, but also improve its protection against damage. While this task seems straightforward, it’s not something that you can do without preparation, training and experience. You can save time, money and energy by hiring an experienced painting company for your project.

Insufficient Preparation

The end result of a paint job largely depends on how prepared the surface is. Preparation is usually the most time-consuming stage of an exterior or siding painting project. Any damage to your home’s exterior must be addressed before painting. A professional painter takes the time to make sure your exterior is properly prepared before proceeding.

Not Properly Handling Lead Paint

There’s a high chance that your home has at least one coat of lead paint if it was built before 1978. Lead paint poses various health hazards. It’s best to have a professional deal with it for your safety.

Not Using a Primer

Skipping the primer is another mistake homeowners usually make when painting their homes. Any stipped, weathered and unpainted wood requires a few coats of primer. Priming helps the paint to properly adhere.

Choosing the Wrong Paint

Color isn’t the only thing you should consider when painting your home. You must choose a type of paint that’s suitable for your home’s exterior. Top-grade acrylic paint is one of your best options. This type of paint offers superior durability and long-lasting protection against the element.

Key Considerations when Choosing a Commercial Painter

When you are looking for a commercial painter, naturally you want the best work that fits your budget and requirements. However, it’s an unfortunate truth that many painting companies out there are not truly reputable and professional businesses.

In fact, while some painting companies will pass themselves off as certified professionals, this is not always true. Often when you hire such a company, you’ll end up with an unsatisfactory result. To avoid this kind of issue, you can make sure that you are working with a reputable Cape Cod painting company.

It’s important to make sure you are getting the full picture when entrusting someone with your commercial paint job. If not, you could be subject to liabilities and other issues. A true professional will protect their team as well as his clients. But we’ll discuss this subject further down below.

When searching for a professional painter, it can be hard to know where to look first. Sure, you could look online, but Google can return all kinds of random results. Not to mention, search engines won’t tell you much about their work ethic, experience, insurance, and other important information. Narrow the list down by asking around.

At this point, you need to compare two or three professional painting companies. One of the first things you need to look for when hiring a painting company is their legal forms. Among these, the most important papers to ask for our insurance documents.

How To Install Laminate Flooring

Can you fix water damaged laminate flooring?

When you originally bought your laminate flooring, you probably purchased it for looks as well as functionality. Most laminate is technically able to withstand occasional spills. Consequently, when you drop a glass of juice, it isn’t going to do any damage to the laminate.

Flooring is a different matter.

When laminate becomes super-saturated with liquid, whether it’s water or water mixed with dirt or sewage, it begins to absorb the moisture. Eventually, this can lead to a whole host of problems. For instance, you might notice that certain laminate planks are buckled. Others could be bent in unusual ways. And as you walk across the floor, some planks could “give” under your footsteps.

These are all dramatic — and unpleasant — indicators that your laminate floor needs to be professionally repaired by someone like an expert from ServiceMaster of Lincoln Park.

In the meantime, you should take some immediate actions to get the process moving and your home back to its pre-flooding condition.

How to Fix Laminate Floor Water Damage?

  • Be Sure That the Source of Water Damage Is Contained

There is no point in fixing your laminate floor if it is just going to be damaged again. Find the source of the flooding or leaking and take care of it. By putting your laminate floor repair job on hold till you are sure that the flooding or leaking has ended, you will protect your floor from being waterlogged in future.

  • Inspect the Locking System to Identify Damaged Plans

By doing this, you will determine the destroyed areas. This step should be easy, but it will require your undivided attention. Check for warping and bubbles, also be thorough in your evaluation. Mark the affected areas with a marker pen or sticky notes according to the severity of the damage. This way, you can quickly access how far-reaching the damage is and take the appropriate measures.

  • Get the Right Tools for the Project

Here’s a checklist of the things you will need to get the job done: safety glasses, flooring adhesive, putty knife, utility knife, measuring tape, cleaning solvent, pliers, hammer and replacement underlayment material. You will also need to find a new laminate planks that match your existing flooring. It is not easy to find matching laminates and many homeowners opt to replace the entire floor instead of just fixing the damaged portion. Avoid last-minute shopping trips to the flooring store by having the mentioned materials ready ahead of time.

  • Remove the Laminate Up to the Problem Zone

You will need to use the right tools for this task. If you don’t want to spend money on purchasing new equipment, you can hire a professional. Before you settle on a technician or flooring company, do a background check to ascertain their credibility. If you choose to do it yourself, carefully pull up the damaged planks by running a putty knife under the damaged edges. You must get rid of the entire plank even if only a small portion of it is damaged. This is because every plank is a single unit. Pry up the planks as well as the baseboard to expose the bare floor beneath. Check the sub-flooring for any sign of mold or mildew. If you don’t notice any damage, reinstall the planks that are popped up.

  • Replace the Damaged Planks.

Replacing the damaged planks might be the biggest challenge. Ensure to replace using the same laminate planks you have installed. Unless you bought extra planks when you first installed them, getting exact replacements can be daunting as you could soon discover. To avoid replacing the whole floor, purchase from the same manufacturer or laminate flooring dealer, or at least find a suitable replacement that will balance nicely. Get rid of moldings in preparation for replacing flooring.

  • Finish by Reinstalling The Flooring.

Remember to match any designs on the laminate flooring as closely as possible. Apply enough adhesive and place and heavy object on your new laminate. If installing in water prone areas, like the bathroom, allow the floor to dry completely before using.

Removing the Damaged Laminate Pieces

Pry up the damaged planks one at a time with a putty knife.

  • If you don’t have a putty knife, use a butter knife. Wear protective eye gear during this step to prevent dust, dirt, or anything else from getting into your eyes
  • Dispose of the damaged planks as you go to avoid clutter building up.

Remove the baseboards under the tiles.

  • This exposes the bare floor underneath and lets you fully inspect your floor to check for buildup of dust or mold. Like with the planks themselves, remove the baseboards one at a time to avoid damaging the flooring even further.
  • If you pry up a plank but don’t notice any damage to it, simply reinstall it back into the floor!

Clean the floor underneath the planks before replacing them.

  • Things like water and dirt can build up under your floorboards, so use a broom and dustpan to sweep everything up. Then, take a cloth and wipe every inch of the exposed floor.
  • If there’s anything on the exposed floor, it can prevent the planks from sliding in place next to one another. Go over the area to ensure nothing could get in the way of the planks.

Repair laminate flooring water damage with these steps

Regardless of whether you have major or minor water damage, these six steps will help you contain and repair damage and get your floors back to normal:

1. Stop the leak

source of vinyl floor water damage

If you can’t pinpoint the source of a leak, contact a professional immediately to prevent further damage.

What’s the first step in learning how to fix a laminate floor that got wet?

It’s simple:

Stop it from becoming any wetter.

It’s impossible to fix the damage unless you stop the leak, first. With this in mind, the first step of repair is to locate the source of the water. While there are many causes of flooding when it comes to laminate flooring, faulty appliances (leaking dishwashers are a prime culprit), leaking toilets, and burst pipes are a few of the most common.

If you can’t find the leak easily on your own, contact a local contractor or a water damage contractor to help you find it.

2. Determine how much laminate needs repair

The next thing you’ll have to do is determine how extensive the flooding was, and how much laminate flooring you must repair.

Take a moment to evaluate your laminate flooring in each room. Note boards that are bubbled or warped, and boards that don’t fit together evenly. Mark damaged areas with a colored piece of tape or sticky note.

3. Remove damaged planks

Next, it’s time to remove the damaged planks and get to work fixing the areas that need it.

Before you begin this portion of the project, be sure you have all the tools you’ll need. As a general rule, you’ll need a hammer and a crowbar at the very least, although a utility knife will also come in handy.

4. Replace damaged planks

Once you’ve removed the damaged planks from the affected area, you’ll need to replace them with fresh planks.

While this is a very approachable DIY project, many people find it intimidating, since it can be difficult to match new laminate planks with the laminate planks you already have.

Because of this, this portion of the project will be easier if you have planks left over from when you first installed your floor.

If you don’t have any extra planks, head to your local home store to find planks that match your current planks as closely as possible. A slight variation won’t make a large difference once the planks are installed.

Once you’ve found the replacement planks, fit them with your current planks, taking care to avoid nails and other hazards that may have been exposed when you removed the existing laminate flooring.

Ask for Professional Help

It is true that fixing laminate flooring after getting drenched by water is extremely time-consuming and if you don’t know how to do this, you will cause more damage to your laminate floor.

You should know that there are professionals who are ready to help you in times of need. You can look for a water damage professional to handle the repairs. They can fix the root of the problem and they can replace your flooring professionally.

You don’t have to do it yourself and you won’t have to worry about messing up the installation. You just need to hire the professionals and your problem will be resolved in no time.

Kitchen Remodeling Minor Improvements With Great Impact

Simple Things You Can Do Today To Improve and Update Your Kitchen Style

Whether you actually like to cook or not, the kitchen is usually the heart of a home and where people gather to share and create memories. However, for many of us, just the thought of stepping foot in there for any significant amount of time fills us with dread. From the space being too small or dark, to not being able to find anything and just an overall feeling of being cluttered, sometimes our kitchen is just not a fun place to be. But what can you do about?

You might think that revamping your kitchen space requires spending big bucks, but in reality, there are small things you can do today to give the room new life without having to spend much of anything at all. Small things like adding color and light can make a huge difference and actually make you want to get in there and whip up a few things. Whether you’ve lived in your home for years or just got the keys, we’re giving you five easy to-do tips that will help you fall back in love with your kitchen today.

The main thing that makes a kitchen feel blah and useless is all the clutter and disorganization. Cabinets filled with junk and not being able to find things you actually need can fill you with unnecessary stress and frustration. You can alleviate that problem asap by simply throwing out things that no longer serve you and getting more organized so that your kitchen becomes functional.

Create A Focal Point

Unless you’ve designed it from scratch, most kitchens come with bland white walls that say nothing about your personality and style. Use the backsplash to make a statement by using stick and peel contact paper to add pops of color and create a focal point in the space.

Add Music

The kitchen is the heart of the home. Make it a lively and inviting place by adding a small countertop speaker to play your favorite tunes. Not only will it add to the decor, but the added beats can encourage conversation, dancing and good vibes.

HOW MUCH IS ALL THIS COSTING? PLUS, YOUR OTHER BURNING BUDGET QUESTIONS AROUND OUR RENOVATION

sent out a call for questions regarding the financials around renovating. There were so many amazing questions, so we tried to grab those most frequently asked (and juicy!) ones, so we can answer them here. We’ve learned so much over the last 12 years about budgeting for projects and hope to shed some light on this topic. Design, time, space, manpower, a plan; all things needed for your renovation/remodeling. But let’s be honest, probably the aspect of renovating that scares people most is the money. Reading through your questions, I realized there’s a lot of mystery around it.

A big part of renovating is budgeting. In fact, I would feel 100% confident in saying we are able to renovate BECAUSE WE BUDGET.  So we’re going to pull back the curtain a bit, share our approach to our budget, as well as answer many of the questions sent in on Instagram from all of you.

Of course we won’t pretend we don’t then get the partners and sponsorships — we fully recognize that benefit and perk of our job — but any money saved by those things stays in our project account and goes toward our next project. For us, that means more consistent projects and keeps us and our team employed, but the principle of having the money first, has been the biggest contributor over time to our expanding project budget.

Another major piece is having a process/system for tracking your money. And not in a restrictive way – that’s the wrong mindset. In a freeing way. “We get to spend this much money on our family vacation!” “This money is going toward the bathroom!” This is for my monthly decor budget!” It’s exciting and fun to make plans for your hard-earned dollars.

these are things we are so on board with:

1. Give Every Dollar a Job

Budgeting doesn’t give you more money. It gives your money more purpose.

2. Embrace Your True Expenses

Figure out what you really spend and treat those infrequent expenses (like twice-a-year car insurance or replacing your laptop every two years) like monthly expenses in your monthly budget. When the time comes to pay them, you ain’t sweatin’ it.

3. Roll With the Punches

Accept that things change and your budget needs to be flexible. You won’t spend the same amount on all categories every month, so be prepared to move money around. Moving money around doesn’t mean you are budgeting wrong; it’s a sure sign you’re engaged, and what could be more right?! We talk more about how this one came into play BIG time this year with our exterior renovation below.

4. Age Your Money

Break the paycheck-to-paycheck cycle by aiming to reach the point of using the money you earned last month to pay this month’s expenses. This is the part that is most freeing, and when you really begin to love it. This is what has allowed us to renovate more and more. We have rolled over our money and aged it for over a decade!

KITCHEN DECORATING IDEAS

Fall kitchen decorating has become so fun for me! Maybe it’s because this is the first time I’ve been able to decorate my kitchen here at the Tanglewood house. So, come on in and see fall in my newly renovated kitchen

The kitchen is not quite finished. There are still lots of little things that need to be done! So this week the workers will be back. And I’ll temporarily move the fall decor until they are done!

BEST FALL KITCHEN DECORATING IDEA

No matter where your kitchen is located in you home, keep the fall decorations and the color palette the same as the rest of your home. I love, love love the look of a cohesive home! And two of the biggest ways to create a gorgeous look no matter what season you are decorating for is to

My kitchen is white so it is easy to add almost any color to it when I decorate. But I also know that using the same color palette as the rest of the fall decor in my home will make a beautiful, pulled-together look! Even a color palette can be considered a repeated element

Did you notice all the white pumpkins scattered about? I call County “pumpkin land”! As I drive there are fields and fields of pumpkins! Pumpkins fill roadside stands and farmer’s markets here! So, I’ve used them liberally throughout our house. They are repeated fall decor. Subconsciously your eyes have been looking for them because they see white pumpkins as a repeated pattern in my home

Budget Kitchen Upgrades for Every Kitchen that Will Change the Way You Cook

Cooking is much more fun when you have all the right gear to make your food dreams into food reality. If you have a contentious relationship with your kitchen, the problem may have to do with things like dull knives or the wrong tools, requiring you to undertake boring, repetitive tasks to make the simplest things.

I love to cook, and I think part of the fun for me is having the toys in my kitchen to play with when a recipe strikes my fancy or I get a crazy idea. Of course cooking is going to be more fun when you have the right equipment—laboring away in an under-equipped kitchen can lead to a ton of time-consuming, boring, manual labor that could be easily accomplished with the right multi-taskers in your kitchen cabinets.

A Good, Sharp Knife

If you haven’t used a quality knife while cooking, you haven’t lived. There’s nothing like flying through kitchen tasks with a trusty, sharp blade to make you feel like at home in the kitchen. Just make sure you buy quality, buy sharp, and buy a knife that compliments you. We’ll get to that in a moment, but before we go further it’s worth noting you don’t have to break the bank on quality knives—consider them an investment, but there’s no need to take out a second mortgage.

explains, “Your knives do not need to be the latest and greatest available, only well maintained. Knives should fit who you are, your cooking style, your hand, and most importantly, your budget.” We agree. Make sure you try out before you buy, and you should probably have two or three good, sharp knives that you like in your kitchen.

also suggests you keep your knives happy: “Sharp knives cut and dull knives tear. This is something that a chef in culinary school taught me and I will never forget it. Sharp knives allow you to be precise, get professional grade cuts, butcher proteins with ease and make chopping veggies a lot easier.” He notes that if your knives are losing their edge, pick up a honing steel—something we’ve shown you how to use before

Ways To Simplify Your Kitchen That Make a Big Difference

When you simplify the kitchen, everything gets streamlined and the days flow easier. Since so much of life is lived in the kitchen, paring things down so that it’s completely manageable simplifies life on pretty much all levels.

When the kitchen is streamlined it’s easier to prepare meals and whatever mess happens through the rest of the house isn’t as overwhelming, because there is one area that is simple and easy to do what you need to do in.

Pare down the Tupperware.

Pull all your food storage containers out of their drawer or cupboard and immediately discard all the cheap plastic containers (think: yogurt, sour cream & cottage cheese containers). If they can be recycled, then great. But if not, don’t worry about it – you need to just get them out of your home and cupboard. Look at what’s left and pick out enough containers to last you a week: approximately 10. I keep only 10 containers and there are 7 people in our house. Keeping it down to this amount means that when you see there are no more containers available it’s time to clean and fridge and have a left-over night for dinner. This prevents containers from being pushed back in the fridge, forgotten and growing.

Evaluate the decorations.

Do you love the decorations in your kitchen? Or are they there because “that’s what should be there.” I see this most with cupboards and tall ceiling: most people feel that there needs to be plants or ceramics or some cute shabby chic decoration. If you love these items, then keep them. But if they are just there because “there is supposed to be something up there,” and the dust on the plastic ivy annoys you… then take those suckers down and be free of them. It will give your kitchen some breathing room and there will be no more “I should dust that” thoughts running through your head.

Minimize the dishes.

Getting down to only the dishes you use daily is a tremendous help. It forces one to wash dishes consistently, which means that the dirty dishes never take over the kitchen again. You know… the ones when you’ve waited for 4 days to catch up on dishes and now it’s going to take 3-4 hours to do them all? When you pare down to only what you use each day, they can all be done in a few minutes and you can start fresh in the morning. Forcing yourself into a new routine is one of the best ways to develop it: there are no other options.

How Much to Tip Movers After They’ve Hauled Your Stuff

Wondering how much to tip movers? At the end of a long day of packing your possessions, labeling boxes, and fretting about moving everything from Point A to Point B, you might suddenly realize you have no idea how much to tip movers—you know, those guys who hauled your couch up three flights of stairs, along with all the other stuff you’ve accumulated in your lifetime. How much gratuity is customary for such service?

Do you have to tip movers?

Yet tipping movers, like tipping any service worker, is a matter of discretion. In other words, if your movers took extra care when lifting boxes onto the truck or carefully wrapping your grandmother’s mantel clock, then show your appreciation with a nice gratuity. If the movers treated your possessions like junk, there’s no obligation to tip them at all.

Plus, tipping movers may be a disappearing custom. Just like some restaurants now forbid tipping and pay their employees more, some national moving companies are instituting a no-tipping policy, too. Smaller companies may follow suit; however, they work on tighter margins and would likely pass those higher wages onto customers. Either way, you’ll pay more.

How much to tip movers

If you’re using a national moving company, chances are good that tips are a line item on your bill, which you can pay by credit card. That’s the best way to prove to the IRS that tips were part of the total moving costs, if you’re deducting the cost of the move on your tax return

If you’re fine tipping your movers in cash, there’s no need to tip each mover individually; just hand the cash or check to the job boss, who will distribute it. If you’re moving long-distance, and different crews load and unload the truck, divide the overall tip and give half to each crew

Should I Empty the Drawers Before Moving my Dresser?

Should you empty drawers before moving a dresser? Customers often ask us this question. The answer is often no. We can move your dresser loaded. A full dresser is heavy. But, if you don’t unload its contents, you save time. You’ll also open up space in the moving van.

However, like many things in life, the devil is in the details. It’s safer to unpack a dresser before moving it in some situations. Before moving a dresser, we’ll evaluate the situation. We look at the type of dresser and what’s in the drawers. If it’s not safe to move the chest loaded, we’ll empty the drawers and pack the items in separate boxes.

Is the Dresser Sturdy?

You don’t need to empty the draws of a well-built dresser in good shape. What makes a dresser strong? The drawers and frame should be solid. The joints and corners of the piece should be stable. A sturdy dresser is often heavy and made of solid wood.

Do You Have the Strength?

If you’re moving yourself, be sure you have the strength to carry a bulky, heavy piece. You’ll have to keep the dresser upright if the drawers are loaded. Plan ahead to determine how you’ll get the piece through doors and down stairs.

What’s in the Drawers?

Even if your dresser is solidly built, you might need to unload it. You should remove and pack separately certain types of belongings. In general, soft things such as clothing, towels, sheets or pillows can remain in the drawers. Just be sure that the drawers aren’t overstuffed

Remove heavy objects and pack them in separate boxes. Small, fragile or valuable items should also be packed separately. Here’s a breakdown of things that need to be packed in boxes:

Fragile items: Remove anything that could break if it shifts. Glass, art or porcelain should be removed. Wrap and pack these things separately.

Jewelry: Jewelry can get lost or damaged during a move. Because it’s small, it can shift and get stuck in corners or slip through cracks. Secure and pack jewelry in a separate box.

Money: Don’t move cash, checks, credit cards and the like in a dresser. You’ll want to keep money with you rather than loading it onto a moving van.

Books, CDs, DVDs: These items are too heavy to stay in the drawers. They may shift during the move and damage your dresser.

Valuable papers: Empty these from your dresser. Carry them with you rather than loading them in a van.

Small, easily lost items: Anything that can shift, such as desk supplies, cosmetics or other small items should be packed securely in boxes

Why Green Is A Critical Color For Corporate Event Planner

What is the difference between an event planner and an event coordinator?

There are several loosely-defined terms in the event industry. That is, words that can be interpreted in different ways. The word “event” by itself could mean anything from a birthday party to a benefit concert. This use of different terms can lead to confusion and misunderstandings, specifically around job titles. One of the biggest areas of confusion concerns event planners vs. event coordinators.

Event Planners vs. Event Coordinators

Outside the industry, many people do not understand the difference between an event planner and an event coordinator. Generally speaking, the planner makes critical decisions regarding what, when, who, and how. An event coordinator, on the other hand, is responsible for making sure all the details are executed and that each vendor shows up on time and performs appropriately.

Event Planning – Creating the Big Picture

When it comes to event planning, you want to focus on the “planning” part. No big event happens without a plan. Whether it’s a charity gala, a corporate event, a wedding, or a convention, detailed plans are drawn up long before the event kicks off. These plans include finding the best dates and venues, deciding on a theme, and figuring out a budget.

An event planner works with clients from the beginning. They start with the original concept of the event. From there, they work out all the major details that need to be in place for the event to happen.

Event planning involves working with the client to understand how the client envisions the event. The event planner takes the client’s vision and works to make it a practical reality. The goal is to meet the client’s objectives for the event while ensuring all the pieces are in place so that the event can go off smoothly.

Think of the event planner as the “big picture” person. Their job is to design the event from beginning to end with the client’s goals in mind. This might include tasks such as:

  • Coming up with ideas for the event’s theme
  • Deciding on a color scheme and designing invitations
  • Working with the client to create a budget
  • Locating the best venue
  • Planning the event’s entertainment
  • Finding a caterer and deciding on a menu
  • Negotiating contracts with hotels and vendors

The purpose of event planning is to get all the requirements in place for the event to happen. This doesn’t mean event planning stops when the event starts. It’s common for event planners to work during and after the event to wrap up any loose ends. The bulk of their work, however, happens before the event.

Event Coordinators

Coordinators, like planners are logic-focused but work with you within a shorter timeframe well into the planning process. They will confirm the contracts with each vendor, create timelines for the day of, insure payments and get guest counts in order once the event is approaching. As your main point of contact during the last few weeks leading up to your event, this person helps to tweak details and tie up loose ends to be fully prepared. The value of having an event coordinator is to ensure everything is on schedule, and to make sure everything is running smoothly. Usually this person will be there the day of the event to tend to detail, resolve issues that may arise and take control so you can enjoy your time with your guests.

So What’s the Difference?

Though many people don’t understand the difference between a planner and a coordinator, the difference is relatively simple: The event planner makes the critical decisions (the who, what, when, where and how) while the coordinator makes sure all details are executed and as seamlessly as possible.

More specifically, event planning is the creative, pre-event process. It consists of managing all activities before the actual event and helping the client to make such decisions as:

  • Event colors and/or theme
  • Menu and caterers
  • Venue
  • Overall space design
  • Table layouts
  • Entertainment choice

Contrast this with the event coordinators, who are less involved in event décor and design and focus more on the actual scheduling and directing of event staff and management of volunteers—not only for the event itself but also for set up and take down/clean up. Coordination also includes scheduling and directing of vendors.

Coordinators handle event logistics, but that doesn’t mean coordinators never get creative. This role also includes finding solid, reliable vendors and firing them if their services aren’t up to par. Coordinators also must ensure that the event’s visual aspects are appealing.

Conclusion

While the role of an event planner and event coordinator are technically different, they are also extremely similar. Whether you’re planning an event that will take place in the future by carefully selecting colors, entertainment and a menu that will suit your client’s needs or coordinating every detail of that event in real time—each role requires that you think on your feet and survey your events. You must be ready to handle whatever crazy or unforeseen thing that comes your way, whether it’s a missing wedding dress, a downpour during an outside fundraiser, or a caterer that’s running behind.

Remember that becoming an event planner doesn’t happen overnight; it takes years of experience, including working as an event coordinator to become familiar, comfortable and well-versed in what it takes to make an event happen. Being an event planner carries a great deal of responsibility—it’s ultimately up to the planner to ensure that the client is happy by crafting and designing an event that fits his or her (or their) needs and expectations.

Deciding If You Need A Car Accident Lawyer

Why Should I Hire a Lawyer After a Car Accident?

If you have been injured in a car accident caused by another’s actions, it is in your best interest to hire a car accident lawyer as soon as possible to help with your injury claim. An attorney will represent your interests throughout the process and will be dedicated to defending your rights. Car Accident Lawyer  handles these cases on a contingent fee, which means you do not have to pay anything unless and until the case settles. That means you will never receive a bill from us. We only get paid if you get paid.

Hiring a car accident lawyer can be extremely valuable to your injury claim. These are some of the many benefits to hiring a lawyer and how he or she can help with your claim.

1. Handle the Insurance Company for You

Insurance companies are in the business of making money. Their insurance adjusters are highly trained at negotiating insurance settlements and will do everything they can to minimize what they pay, even to the point of denying a valid claim.

If you do not have experience negotiating with insurance companies, it can be difficult to ensure your best interests are represented and that you receive the full value of your claim. Furthermore, an insurance adjuster may get you to inadvertently issue a statement or make a comment that could affect your ability to recover the compensation you deserve.

Having an attorney represent you before the insurance company can have a significant impact on your claim. Your attorney will:

  • Negotiate with the insurance adjuster
  • Handle all details of your claim for you
  • Help prepare a written or verbal statement that is carefully crafted to your benefit
  • Represent your best interests and fight to obtain the compensation you deserve

2. Prove Liability for Your Injuries

Often one of the most complicated parts of a car accident injury claim is proving that another’s negligence caused your injuries. This is an important part of every car accident claim, as individuals harmed by another’s actions have the right to compensation.

However, all parties involved will likely attempt to shift blame, making it difficult to prove exactly who is liable for your injuries.

An accomplished personal injury attorney will be able to sift through the evidence to determine exactly who caused your injuries and then build a strong argument on your behalf.

3. Determine the True Value of Your Injuries

Another complicated part of many car accident claims is making sure you receive compensation that is representative of the true value of your claim and the damages you have suffered. Insurance companies are skilled at convincing injury victims to accept lowball settlement offers and will work to pay as little as possible for your claim.

However, attorneys who have handled countless auto accident claims know the true value of your claim and will not accept any settlement offer that does not cover the full extent of your losses. We will work to help make sure you receive compensation for all of your losses, including those you have lost in the past and may lose in the future. This can include:

  • Past and future medical bills
  • Lost wages and future lost income
  • Pain and suffering

4. Negotiate a Fair Settlement

Insurance adjusters spend their days negotiating insurance settlements. They are skilled negotiators who vigorously fight for their best interests. So too are auto accident lawyers. We regularly negotiate with insurance companies and other attorneys. However, the significant difference is that we are solely focused on the best interests of our clients.

Before entering into a negotiation with an insurance adjuster, contact a trusted car accident lawyer who has experience doing just that on a regular basis. Our attorneys are experienced in negotiating fair settlements for our clients that help them obtain the compensation they deserve. We will not settle for anything less.

5. File a Personal Injury Lawsuit if Necessary

A significant benefit to hiring a car accident lawyer to handle your claim is that we can advise you of all of your legal options. If the insurance company is unwilling to offer a reasonable settlement amount, we are prepared to file a personal injury lawsuit to help you get the compensation you deserve.

What Know and What to Do After a Car Accident

Tip #1 – Seek immediate medical attention

The number one issue following a car accident is the health and safety of all involved. As such, the first, and most vital step following a collision is seeking prompt attention for all injuries and medical issues. Many victims require evaluation by several medical professionals and are best advised to follow the doctor’s orders precisely.

Tip #2 – Stay safe while you exchange information

If it is reasonably safe to do so, be sure to move your vehicles from the path of oncoming traffic, as well as turn off the engine right away. As you speak with the other drivers or police, keep out of the roadway and maintain a safe distance from the shoulder.

Tip #3 – Document all medical attention

Injured plaintiffs should document all aspects of their medical treatment, including all expenses, co-pays, and out-of-pocket costs associated with follow-up care or prescription medications. Not only will this ensure enough evidence to support a claim for damages, but it will help plaintiffs keep a timeline of events following the accident, as the lawsuit process often spans at least a year or more.

Tip #4 – Follow doctors’ orders

Even if you feel back to your old self, you should always follow your doctors’ orders with regard to taking it easy and not engaging in too much physical activity too soon. Not only could you aggravate your injuries, but your premature return to an active lifestyle could provide the defense with arguments against your injury claims.

Tip #5 – Be wary of insurance company tactics

One important caveat to remember is the insurance company has a goal of paying plaintiffs as little for their claims as possible. Companies will employ several tactics to divert victims’ attention from the true value of their claims and persuade them to settle for a fraction of what the case is actually worth. At Hardy Wolf & Downing, we are not intimidated by the ploys of insurance companies and encourage our clients to discuss all settlement offers with their car accident attorney before accepting anything from an insurer.

What Are Common Injuries from Car Accidents?

Sometimes auto accidents can lead to catastrophic injuries such as traumatic brain injuries and spinal cord injuries, or in particularly tragic cases, wrongful death.

Some other common injuries that victims of auto accidents may experience include:

  • Soft tissue injuries – This type of injury occurs when a muscle, ligament, or tendon is stretched and can include whiplash
  • Cuts or contusions – This can range from minor scrapes to serious injuries, and can be caused by loose items flying around the car during your accident
  • Head injuries – This could include muscular injuries or even brain injuries, depending on the severity of your accident
  • Bruises – Bruises, while not particularly serious, can be very painful and can occur if you were slammed around in the vehicle at the time of your accident
  • Regardless what type of injury you sustained in your auto accident, we can help you obtain the maximum compensation you need in order to ensure that your present and future needs are met. We only accept a limited amount of personal injury cases so you can be sure that your matter will receive our undivided attention.

Damages caused by common accident injuries

At the outset, it is important to clarify that many common auto accident injuries are non-physical in nature. The law is set up to compensate you for any losses you incur in connection with the accident. Those losses are called damages.

Damages certainly include your physical injuries but they also include emotional suffering, psychological injuries, financial losses, adverse changes in lifestyle, and diminished quality of life. In the event of death, they also include the losses and suffering of specific family members.

Types of car accidents that cause the most severe injuries

Certain car accidents are significantly more likely to cause severe injuries than others. This is not to say that lower intensity accidents are not capable of causing severe injuries rather, they are much less likely to result in a something like a severe traumatic brain injury or spinal cord damage.

Ceiling Fan Installation Pros And Cons

Wiring a Ceiling Fan and Light

Wiring a ceiling fan and light can seem like a daunting task, but it doesn’t have to be. Pro Tool Reviews gives you a visual guide and step by step instructions on making the best connections for your particular ceiling fan installation. ON a scale of 1-10, the level of difficulty on this project is a 5, though it can be more complex if you include the ancillary projects such as running wiring through walls, etc.

Codes and Safety Tips

It’s always important to follow the local codes in your area when wiring a ceiling fan and light. Permits may be required for interior electrical work. When working with electricity, always remember to turn off the power, test the wiring with an electrical tester (or voltmeter) to ensure the power is off, secure the panel box so no one can accidentally re-engage power while you are working, and consult a professional to ensure you are doing things correctly and within the specifications of your state and local codes. Read all the instructions and safety information that comes with your ceiling fan.

We’ll go through each type of switching methodology and discuss what each entails in terms of wiring and controlling your ceiling fan/light. The four methods are:

Powered ceiling fan and/or light without any switches (no switches)

Switching the light and using the pull chain for the fan (Single switch)

Switching the light and fan from the same switch (Single switch)

Switching the light and fan from separate switches (Two switches)

Switching the light and fan from the same switch with power at the switch (Single switch)

Powered Ceiling Fan and/or Light Without Any Switches (No Switches)

This method is often used when you simply cannot run a switch into the room, but you do have the ability to pull power to the fan form a nearby location. It’s certainly an acceptable wiring method and the fans all come with pull string switches to control the fans and light kits

Switching the Light and Using the Pull Chain for the Fan (Single Switch)

This method and the following are the most commonly used since they only require a single light switch. In many older homes there was never any thought to wiring up a second switch since most homes didn’t have a powered ceiling fan. As a result, many homeowners are forced to use the single switch to control the light and/or both aspects of their ceiling fans.

How to Install a Ceiling Fan

Having a ceiling fan in your home is a great way to keep the whole room cool without the costs of running an air conditioner all day. Although it might seem like a formidable task when you’re just starting out, it’s easy to replace an old lighting fixture with a new ceiling fan if you know the right way to do it. By breaking the process into steps and knowing how to work safely with electricity, you can turn a fan kit into a working fan in less than a day.

Turn the electricity off at the circuit breaker box. When working with electricity or wiring, you should always cut power to the area before you touch anything else. Locate the circuit breaker box in your home and turn off the power to the room or area your fan will be installed in

Remove any screws holding the old fixture in place. Use a ladder or step-ladder to safely climb up towards the roof to give you access the fixtures. Hold the fixture in place with one hand as you remove any screws securing it to the roof. Once they have been taken out, the old fixture should be able to detach from the ceiling

Disconnect the wires from the old electrical fixture. Locate the point where the wires from the fixture are held to the wires coming from the ceiling with plastic connectors. Ensure the fixture is supported by something other than the wires and begin unscrewing and removing each plastic connector. Once disconnected, lower the fixture from your ceiling and discard it or store it somewhere safe for future use

Remove the old ceiling box. The ceiling box is a circular metal fitting that other fixtures attach to. Look for any screws or nails holding the old ceiling box in place and remove them. Push the circuit box further into the ceiling, or attempt to pry it out to remove it.

Ceiling Fans

Ceiling fans circulate air flow through your home in a cost-effective manner. They can be used during both summer and winter and are an easy way to give the interior of your home a new look

How Do if I Know if My Ceiling Fan Is Functioning Correctly?

If you’ve ever been worried about a ceiling fan that wobbled, worry no more. The reason a fan wobbles is not because of how it is mounted but is instead all about alignment. When the fan blades are out of balance, a fan will seesaw. There are several reasons that might cause your ceiling fan to rock back and forth precariously, but there is usually no threat of the fan falling down.

Reasons your ceiling fan may wobble:

Bent blade irons

Blades of different sizes or shapes

Blade irons not screwed on straight

Warped blades

A wobbling fan can be a nuisance, and a visit from one of our electricians can solve the problem right away

Ceiling Fan Installation Cost

How Much Does It Cost to Install a Ceiling Fan?

A ceiling fan is a type of mechanical fan that hangs from the ceiling, providing ventilation for the surrounding area through the rotation of broad blades. A ceiling fan can help you save money on energy costs, since it’s an affordable and efficient alternative to air conditioning. It also provides you with an easy way to create airflow and coolness in your home.

There are several factors that affect the cost of installing a ceiling fan, such as labor, fan size, type, style, motors, and more. The average cost to install a ceiling fan ranges between $450-$700, with the average homeowner spending around $575 on installing a mid-range 52” hanging-propeller fan.

Ceiling Fan Costs by Type

The price of a ceiling fan can also vary by type. Whether a fan has a light attachment or a remote control feature can impact the cost of the fan, as can several basic design features of the fan.

Standard Ceiling Fan

This is the type of fan commonly found in most homes. They point straight downward and have blades that rotate parallel to the ceiling. Most have 5 blades and a built-in 1 1 light fixture. They cost anywhere from $50-$300.

Low-profile Ceiling Fan

Also known as “flush mount 2 2” or “hugger” fans, low-profile fans are designed to keep the blades close to the ceiling. This makes them suitable for ceilings 8’ or under. They cost $50-$300.

Hanging Propeller Ceiling Fan

This fan type has its propeller and blades hanging downward from a “downrod”, a pole that extends downward from the fan’s base. Because they hang lower than other fans, they are best for ceilings 9’ or higher. They cost $150-$550.

Directional Ceiling Fan

Directional fans can be adjusted to point in whichever direction you’d like there to be targeted airflow. Their construction is similar to that of a standing fan, albeit mounted 2 upside-down (with a downrod). They cost $150-$800.

Rotational Ceiling Fan

Rotational or “dual-motor” fans are typically directional fans with dual heads, which rotate on an axis (a downrod). They usually cost $200-$1,500.

Wall Ceiling Fan

Wall mounted ceiling fans are directional fans that typically have an adjustable neck. These fans are mounted to provide more angular direction for cooling a specific area rather than to provide cooling for the whole room. They usually cost $270-$1,300.

What Size of Ceiling Fan Do I Need?

The size of a ceiling fan is based on the measurement of its blade span: the diameter range of the blades while they rotate. This can be measured in two different ways, depending on whether the fan has an odd or even number of blades.

Best Ceiling Fans

For increased circulation and air movement in any space, consider installing a ceiling fan. Available in a wide range of sizes to suit very small rooms or large living areas, ceiling fans offer an easy solution to make your home more comfortable. In summer, they provide a welcome breeze and distribute cool air efficiently. In winter, they can be used to push warm air from the ceiling down into the room.

Ceiling fans generally range in size from a petite 30-inch blade span to 60 inches or more in diameter. The square footage of your room and ceiling height are the two most important dimensions to consider when selecting a fan model. In addition, you can also opt for a ceiling fan with an integrated lighting fixture to increase illumination in any room.

This popular ceiling fan is a top pick for any room that could benefit from more air movement. With three fan speeds and an airflow rating of 5102 CFM, this 52-inch fan from Hunter is sized right for mid-to-large rooms. In addition, it features an integrated two-light fixture with a frosted bowl. Dim the lights or turn them to full brightness for more illumination in your living room, bedroom, basement, etc.

If you can’t stand the thump-thump-thump of a ceiling fan while you’re trying to sleep, definitely look for a model that is known for being quiet and well-balanced. Casablanca fans have an excellent reputation for build quality and durability, and the Durant model is popular as a bedroom fan.

This ceiling fan doesn’t just circulate air—it turns heads. The Minka Aire Light Wave is a stylish ceiling fan that fits right into homes seeking a beautiful, modern ceiling fan. The body and blades of this fan are finished to mimic Koa wood, and the resemblance to the real thing is so close that nearly everyone agrees no one will know the difference once the fan is installed.

Mold Inspection

“Mold remediation is the process of treating mold-contaminated areas, effectively stopping, reducing, and repairing the growth of mold,” said. “Mold needs warmth, moisture, and food. Anytime there is a water loss, it needs to be dealt with immediately. It only takes 48 to 72 hours for mold to become present.”

“Not enough people know that mold assessments and remediation are two different processes that should be kept separate and professionally handled,” he said. “However, when used in a collaborative effort, they can help solve a mold issue much more comprehensively.”

And dealing with it might be dangerous, because mold can easily damage your health if you aren’t well prepared equipment-wise. What happens after a mold inspection?

This depends entirely on the outcome of the inspection.  In many cases, contacted by homeowners who already know they have mold in their house and they are looking for a professional opinion on the severity of the mold, what allowed it to grow and how to get rid of it.  If a mold inspection reveals mold, then produce a certified mold assessment report, which is almost always required to hire someone to remove mold.

When is a mold assessment required

A mold assessment is needed in order for you to hire a remediation company to remove more than 10 square feet of mold from a structure, including houses and other residences.  Almost all mold inspections reveal more than this amount of mold

Why Pay For Mold Testing When A Mold Inspection Is Free?

You’ve discovered mold in your home or office. Now what? If you’re like most people who find mold, your first thought is to call a mold removal company to have it tested so that you can see if it’s dangerous. However, very often when customers call a mold removal company, they find out that mold testing is very expensive—anywhere from $200 to $1000.

Mold Testing vs. Mold Inspection

So what’s the difference between mold testing and mold inspection? Unless you’ve gone through the hassle of dealing with mold before, chances are you don’t know what is involved with either one.

Mold testing is when a professional comes and takes samples of the air around the mold. Using a spore trap, they will capture the spores in the air and will then send it to a lab to be analyzed. The mold may also be determined by testing the surface around the mold area. The mold tester will do this by taking a swab sample, a tape sample, or by removing a piece of the mold-infected area.

Mold inspection is when a trained mold inspector comes and looks for evidence of mold inside walls and other areas, including areas where there may be mold damage, such as inside crawlspaces and inside basements. They will also look for sources of unwanted moisture which may be causing the mold growth.

All Mold Needs to Go—Not Just Black Mold

Mold testing can reveal what type of mold you have, but even if it’s not black mold, it will still need to go. While some strains are more toxic than other strains, no mold is good to just have hanging around.

Hiring Tax Preparation As A Good Technique On Filing Taxes

How do I prepare a US tax return?

Tax preparation is the process of preparing tax returns, often income tax returns, often for a person other than the taxpayer, and generally for compensation. Tax preparation may be done by the taxpayer with or without the help of tax preparation software and online services. Tax preparation may also be done by a licensed professional such as an attorney, certified public accountant or enrolled agent, or by an unlicensed tax preparation business. Because United States income tax laws are considered to be complicated, many taxpayers seek outside assistance with taxes (53.5% of individual tax returns in 2016 were filed by paid preparers). The remainder of this article describes tax preparation by someone other than the taxpayer.

Some states have licensing requirements for anyone who prepares tax returns for a fee and some for fee-based preparation of state tax returns only. The Free File Alliance provides free tax preparation software for individuals with less than $58,000 of adjusted gross income for tax year 2010. People who make more than $58,000 can use Free File Fillable Forms, electronic versions of U.S. Internal Revenue Service (IRS) paper forms.

Internal Revenue Service (IRS)

All U.S. citizens and residents living or traveling outside the United Sates are generally required to file income tax returns in the same way as those residing in the United States.  The deadline to file taxes is April 15th.

The Embassy does not have IRS tax forms as all forms can be printed from the IRS website.  There is no U.S. Internal Revenue Service representative in Indonesia.  The Consular Section is not authorized to accept any forms or filings for U.S. income taxes and will not forward completed returns to the IRS.  Should you have taxpayer questions, please consult the IRS website at Internal Revenue Service  or call the IRS international Hotline (Monday to Friday from 6AM to 11PM EST) at +1-267-941-1000.

The IRS has a comprehensive tax page, U.S. Citizens and Resident Aliens Abroad, which is directed to U.S. citizens who reside abroad. This page contains basic tax information that Americans overseas need to know and also includes links to more detailed topics such as the foreign earned income exclusion, foreign tax credit, reporting foreign bank accounts, Fulbright grants, state taxes, and a myriad of others.

Who Must File?

If you are a U.S. citizen or resident alien living or traveling outside the United States, you generally are required to file income tax returns, estate tax returns, and gift tax returns, and pay estimated tax in the same way as those residing in the United States.  Your worldwide income is subject to U.S. income tax, regardless of where you reside.

Your income, filing status, and age generally determine whether you must file an income tax return.  Generally, you must file a return if your gross income from worldwide sources is at least the amount shown for your filing status in the Filing Requirements table in Chapter 1 of Publication 54, Tax Guide for U.S. Citizens and Resident Aliens Abroad.

Before getting started, you may want to go grab the recipe for my Homemade All Natural – Streak Free Window Cleaning Spray…it’s the best mix on the planet, and I have been using it for years.  All you need is water, vinegar and dish soap…super easy and a money saver too

And in the end, your windows will be sparkly clean!  Believe me, I opened my blinds the other day and they were filthy.  I don’t think I had cleaned them all winter.  Shameful, I know.   Anyhow…here is how I get my windows super clean and streak free no matter how dirty they are

Once you have your homemade window cleanser at the ready, it’s time to put it into action.   Grab yourself a clean white cloth and a piece of wadded up newspaper…yep, newspaper.  It’s a game changer, folks

Today I want to share one of my most popular posts with you! A couple of years ago, I was trying to photograph my kitchen for an upcoming post, and noticed the grime in between those two glass panels on my oven door.  I did a little research and found out that it wasn’t that hard to clean after all! I hope this post will help you get yours clean too

It is now one of my top viewed posts EVER!  I posted it on Hometalk, and somehow, the conversation veered towards getting that space in between the two glass panels on your stove door clean.  I thought, hmmm….I need to figure this out…this is a matter of great importance!  Well, it kind of is, since I have been hanging a tea towel on my stove to hide the gunk that I can’t reach in there.  So, I figured it out, and now…I am going to shame myself by showing you the hideousness that is the inside of my stove, but it will be clean by the end of this post

WINDOW CLEANING TIPS FOR THE CLEANEST WINDOWS EVER

Looking for some super simple window cleaning tips? Look no further than these great options. You’ll be seeing your beautiful reflection in no time at all!

I have a confession to make. Our windows are dirty. I’m not talking about a smudge here and there. I’m talking about fingerprints, handprints, dog nose prints and a few seasons worth of grime built up around the windows. Window cleaning is not my strong suit, and it seems like as soon as it’s done, it’s time to clean them again. But with these tricks, you can get absolutely spotless windows (no, really!) with less effort than you’d think. Which of these window cleaning tips do you plan to try first?

Essential Window Cleaning Tips

First thing’s first: It’s time to clean the blinds. And cleaning between every single slat used to be tedious work, but it’s not anymore.

Get in those hard-to-reach window tracks with a sponge brush dipped in Pine-sol. It’ll make the house smell great, and you’ll finally have white window tracks again.

But if your window tracks look more like this (as mine do), it’s time to harness the power of baking soda and vinegar. Let those ingredients do their thing for 5-10 minutes, and the grime just wipes right off.

How to Clean Windows Without Streaks

This blog post will teach you how to clean windows without streaks. The cleaners at Simply Spotless are well versed in window cleaning. You can add window cleaning as an extra to your cleaning service whenever you need it. We also provide window cleaning as part of our bond (end of lease) cleaning package.

Dust and brush down the windows

The first step to clean your windows without streaks is to remove any excess dirt, dust, and cobwebs. Find a dust-pan brush, a dusting wand, a broom, or something similar. Then brush down the windows to remove any built up dirt, cobwebs, or grime. It best to start at the top of each window and work your way down. Then brush down the window sill and use a dust pan or vacuum to pick up anything that fell on the window sill and the floor.

Pick a detergent and start washing

Both of these will do the job. However, some of you may prefer to use something you already have lying around your home. If that’s the case then you could try a tiny bit of dishwashing detergent mixed with water or you could try vinegar. I’ll talk more about Vinegar later. If you’re using a store bought window cleaning detergent, then just spray it on the window and wipe in a circular motion with a paper towel, newspaper, or a microfibre cloth (recommended).

If you’re using detergent mixed with water then just dip the microfibre cloth (or the sponge of your squeegee) into the water and rub the window in a circular motion. Think Karate Kid – wax on, wax off. For stubborn marks, you might need to get store bought window cleaning solutions involved. Alternatively, you can add a cap of methylated spirits to your water instead.

TIP 1: To get a good clean, it’s best to use cold water. Hot water evaporates too quickly.

TIP 2: Always clean from the top of the windows down. That way you won’t have dirty water dripping down onto the areas you’ve already cleaned.

Squeegee the window dry

You don’t have to use a squeegee to dry the window but it’s the fastest and most efficient way to get it done. However, using a squeegee properly takes a bit of practice. Hold the squeegee so that the handle is at a 45 degree angle to the glass. Start at the top left of the window and snake your way down going from left to right and then right to left. Use a rag or cloth to wipe the squeegee dry between each stroke or when needed. That will help to prevent steaks.
